FashionUnited: 'Sustainability Remains a Challenge for Wholesale and Retail'

Operating sustainably remains a challenge for the wholesale and retail sectors, according to research by the Utrecht-based IT consultancy firm Conclusion MBS. Of the surveyed organizations, 68 percent indicate that sustainability is a challenge.

At the same time, 45 percent consider it one of the most important developments in the industry. The study, conducted among nearly 500 decision-makers, identifies high costs and complex supply chains as the biggest obstacles.

For 60 percent of respondents, the high costs of sustainable initiatives are the biggest issue. Thirty percent struggle with the complexity of the supply chain, while 25 percent cite a lack of knowledge as a barrier. Companies recognize the need for sustainability, but implementation remains difficult.

Technology as a tool

The study highlights that process standardization with IT, such as AI and ERP systems, can support businesses. However, many companies still face challenges. Among respondents struggling with this, 61 percent say that process complexity is the biggest obstacle. Organizational resistance (33 percent) and lack of time (33 percent) are also significant factors.
