FashionUnited: Bankruptcy in your shopping street Is not immediately cause for concern

News about bankruptcies in Dutch shopping streets is becoming increasingly prominent. Many (independent) retailers have seen a neighboring store go bankrupt in recent months.

Although such news can come unexpectedly, the disappearance of a store does not necessarily mean trouble for the future of the entrepreneur, according to experts. Many retail spaces quickly find new tenants. For example, Blokker locations were in high demand, and Scotch & Soda and Esprit stores also found new tenants swiftly.

Nowadays, unlike in previous years, stores are delivered move-in ready and of high quality, according to Erica Kruissen, spokesperson for JB Retail. This allows new tenants to move in quickly.

"A store doesn’t go bankrupt for no reason; in most cases, it wasn’t attracting enough customers," says Gertjan Slob of retail location analysis firm Locatus. "A bankruptcy can also bring in a new tenant who attracts a fresh audience," he adds.
