The development company OpenAI demonstrated the new feature with a search query: "What is the best espresso machine under $200 that replicates the taste of coffee in Italy?" In response, ChatGPT suggested several models with photos, prices, and links to sellers.
OpenAI emphasized that the selection of answers is not based on paid advertising placements. For Google, shopping search is a lucrative business, as companies can pay to have their products prominently displayed. OpenAI only worked with 'partners' to keep the prices up to date, said the responsible manager, Adam Fry, to the tech blog 'The Verge.' OpenAI has not disclosed details about who these partners are.
Initially, the shopping assistance is limited to several product categories: electronics, fashion, cosmetics, and household items. Users interested in an item can ask ChatGPT further questions about it. OpenAI plans to make this feature quickly accessible to all approximately 500 million users. This could enable the AI company to compete not only with Google but also with specialized shopping advice websites.
In addition to shopping, OpenAI has enhanced the ChatGPT search feature with suggestions for auto-completing sentences and displaying current trending searches.
