On Cyber Monday, 5.10 million payments were registered, which is a slight decrease from last year's 5.12 million payments. On Black Friday, there were 5.82 million payments, which was 7.13 million in 2023. That's a drop of as much as 18.4%. This is the first time since 2016 that the number of iDEAL payments decreased on these days.
Not only did iDEAL see a decrease, the number of debit card payments was also lower this year than in 2023, both compared to the holidays and regular days, says Betaalvereniging Nederland. According to Amos Kater, Chief Product Officer of iDEAL, this shows that consumers are increasingly taking advantage of early offers, possibly reducing the traditional peaks on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
Remarkably, the period prior to Black Friday, between November 22 and 28, actually showed a 27% increase in the number of transactions, with a total of 36.25 million payments. Consumers are making their purchases earlier and earlier leading up to the holidays, possibly because of retailers' earlier discount offers. It was also notable that Monday, November 25, was the busiest day for iDEAL, with a total of 5.92 million payments.
Although Black Friday was not the busiest day of the year this year for the first time since 2016, iDEAL processed a record 56.82 million transactions during the entire Black Friday Week, including Cyber Monday. This represents an increase of 12.31% over 2023.
